" I long to know Christ and the power which is in His resurrection, and to share in His sufferings and die even as He died" Php 3:10
To know Jesus according to Paul the Apostle, is to become a partaker of his death and ressurection or to know the power set at work through his death and ressurection. In our language, it is to say, that whoever does not taste of his suffering, will never taste of the victories of his ressurection or the benefits of his ressurection. But did not Christ himself say this, that a servant is not above his master and as they have done to him, they shall do to us?
Php 3:10 That I may know him, (2) and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;
Knowing him
I would first of all like us to see what that word "know" means, this will help us understand what Paul meant, though he already explained in his elaboration.
KNOW from Strongs 11097 in Greek is, γινώσκω ginosko pronounced ghin-oce’-ko. It is used in the AV as know 196 times, perceive 9 times, understand times. It means to:
1) to learn to know, come to know, get a knowledge of perceive, feel

THE POWER OF HIS RESSURECTION
Power from Strongs1411 in Greek is δύναμις dunamis pronounced doo’-nam-is. Used in the AV-power 77 times, mighty work 11 times, strength 7 times, miracle 7 times, might 4 times, virtue 3 times, mighty 2 times, misc 9; it is found 120 times in scriptures.
It means
1) strength power, ability
1a) inherent power, power residing in a thing by virtue of its nature, or which a person or thing exerts and puts forth

FELLOWSHIP OF HIS SUFFERING
FELLOWSHIP from Strongs number 2842 is κοινωνία koinonia pronounced koy-nohn-ee’-ah. Used in the AV for fellowship 12 times, communion 4 times, communication 1time, distribution 1 time, contribution 1 time, to communicate 1 time; it is found 20 times in Scriptures. The word means
1) fellowship, association, community, communion, joint participation, intercourse

TO KNOW HIM means to be LIKE HIM or to be UNITED with HIM

This is what cried out for!!!! Paul did not physically see the works of Christ. He did not see those big drops of blood falling of a human's face as he prayed for "this cup" to pass him by. . Paul was not there when they dragged, mocked, spat upon, abused, made naked, scorged. Paul was not there when they crucified the Lord. And just like you and I, he was not there, when our Lord groaned from the pains of the nails that glued him to the cross. He did not hear Christ scream Eli, Eli, Eli, why have you forsaken me. Paul received the mystery of the gospel through revelation and not by the mouth of any human. It was this desire that drove him to know more of Christ that what could be recounted by the disciples. He longed to see the power that was working behind his passion and the power that was at works behind his ressurection. He did not drink the cup together with the disciples but he drank it with Christ through the gift of revelation and he cried out, "I WANT TO KNOW HIM MORE! or if there is one thing that will make me one with Christ, I WANT ALL!!! I am now enjoying the benefit of the cross but I want to also let other enjoy that benefit through the power of Christ in me!! I want that power of death, sin, the grave and over satan!!! this is what I want.

Christian persecution is not auto destruction.
See what Paul was aksing for had been abused. What he was seeking to be one with the Lord, satan polluted this holy craving into "volontury matrysm" where during the early ages, people desired to be killed, matryed for the gospel so they could be partakers of his glory in the coming age.
In first Peter chapter 2 verse 1, Peter says "I who am myself one of the rulers of the church, and a witness of the death of Christ, having my part in the coming glory, send this serious request to the chief men among you".... Peter became a partaker of Christ suffering and sovereignty through his witnessing of what our Lord went through. So he writes clearly in Chapter 1 verses 13 through what he means by suffering for Christ or becoming a partaker of his suffering saying, 1Pe 4:12 ¶ Dear brothers, do not be surprised, as if it was something strange, if your faith is tested as by fire: 13 "But be glad that you are given a part in the pains of Christ; so that (you will be given a part in the glories of Christ) at the revelation of his glory you may have great joy.
14 If men say evil things of you because of the name of Christ, happy are you; for the Spirit of glory and of God is resting on you.
15 Let no one among you undergo punishment as a taker of life, or as a thief, or as an evil-doer, or as one who is over-interested in other men’s business;
16 But if he undergoes punishment as a Christian, that is no shame to him; let him give glory to God in this name.
17 For the time has come for the judging, starting with the church of God; but if it makes a start with us, what will be the end of those who are not under the rule of God?
18 And if it is hard for even the good man to get salvation, what chance has the man without religion or the sinner?
19 For this reason let those who by the purpose of God undergo punishment, keep on in well-doing and put their souls into the safe hands of their Maker.
Suffering for Christ is not when you intentionally die to proof you worth to the Lord! It is he who makes us PARTAKERS of his suffering and of his glory. What we will do is to know how he chooses to make us partakers of his suffering and of his glory.

Made Partakers of Christ
It is quite interesting to compare Hebrews 2:14 with Hebrews 3:14, and to note why Christ was made partaker of flesh and blood. It required Christ’s death and resurrection to destroy Satan’s “death” power. In the next chapter we learn that believing sinners delivered by Christ are partakers of Christ.
“Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also Himself likewise took part of the same; that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the Devil.” Hebrews 2:14.
“For we are made partakers of Christ (beneficiaries of his blessing), if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end.” Heb. 3:14.
The spiritual benefits that have come to believers have come because of the death and resurrection of the eternal, omnipotent and sinless Christ. It was on the cross of Calvary that Christ was made sin, and we, thereby, have been made the righteousness of God in Him. II Corinthians 5:21. He was made for a little while lower than the angels for the suffering of death. Hebrews 2:9. Christ suffered for sins once, the Just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God. I Peter 3: 18.
What does it mean to PARTAKE?
Because of the suffering, death and resurrection of the Son of God we have been made partakers of Christ. This Greek word “partakers” is “Metoches” meaning a “participant”, a “sharer” or a “partner”.
Perhaps we have tried to inventory all that we have in Christ, our possessions, our riches, our spiritual blessings; and we have scarcely dared to believe all that God’s Word tells us that we have, and all that we are, and all that we are yet to be in Christ. We are partakers of Christ. In Him “all things” and “all spiritual blessings” are ours.
Six or seven different Greek words are translated “partaker” in the Scriptures. These words are used by the Holy Spirit to tell us what it means to be a partaker of Christ.
Believers are joint-heirs with Christ and are joined to Christ in an inseparable and eternal union;
members of His Body, seated with Him and blessed in Him with all spiritual blessings in the heavenlies. So we join with Paul in “Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light” Colossians 1:12. This Greek word “partaker”, is “meris”, meaning to “get as an allotment”, “to receive a portion”. What a portion! What an allotment! We receive it, by grace, through faith. God made us meet, or literally, “qualified” us. We are God’s workmanship. God did the work. He wrought the Divine transformation. He placed Christ where He is, far above in the heavenlies, and placed us in Christ. When we were dead He made us alive and raised us up. We are God’s workmanship. As partakers of Christ:
We are partakers of the Divine nature. II Peter 1:4
We are partakers of His holiness. Hebrews 12:10
We are partakers of the Holy Spirit. Hebrews 6:4
We are partakers of the heavenly calling. Hebrews 3:1
We are partakers of His sufferings. I Peter 4:13
We are partakers of God’s promise in Christ. Ephesians 3:6
We are partakers of grace. Philippians 1:7
We are partakers of fruit. II Timothy 2:6
We are partakers of the afflictions of the Gospel. II Timothy 1:8
We are partakers of Christ’s glory. I Peter 5: 1.
It is very interesting to trace the meanings of the different words translated “partaker” and learn of our intimate relationship, partnership and fellowship with Christ; “joint-heirs”, “sharers”, “partners”, “Co-partners”. “In Christ” and “Christ in us”. Christ partook of our nature that we might partake of His nature. We partake of His sufferings that we might partake of His glory. As the Captain of our salvation, He was made perfect through suffering.
We are partakers of the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. By that grace He became poor that we, through His poverty, might become rich. The Gospel has made us rich. The Gospel has brought us peace. It is called the “gospel of peace”. Christ made peace by the blood of the cross. Christ is our peace.
Paul seems to have reached the highest expression of the Gospel of Christ when he wrote to Timothy concerning “the gospel of the glory of the Blessed God, committed to my trust.” I Timothy 1:11. Grace and glory are combined in that gospel, which offers grace and glory to every beneficiary, and declares “As He is, so are we in the world”. I John 4:17.
What a spiritual treat, what an abundant feast! Let us spiritually, seriously, prayerfully read that wonderful prayer of the Lord Jesus, John 17:9 to 26, and learn of our union, partnership, eternal glorious fellowship in the Son and in the Father. Then later on in the Book we learn that it has been the delight of the Holy Spirit to be the instrument with the Word of God to bring it about. II Thessalonians 2:13. It means much to be a partaker of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is in the believer. The believer is in the Spirit. The believer is to walk in the Spirit, to be filled with the Spirit, and to manifest the fruit of the Spirit, as he is led and instructed by the Holy Spirit.
The partaker of Christ is the partaker of the Divine nature, because God has created in that believer the new man in righteousness and true holiness, after God’s own image. Christ is the believer’s holiness. I Corinthians 1:30.
Everything that the believer needs to please God has been provided in Christ; even the grace, the boldness, the humility, the power to be a partaker of the afflictions of the Gospel. The true Grace preacher must suffer as an evil-doer to make Paul’s gospel known. “Be not ashamed,” are the words in this connection. II Timothy 1:5 to 12. It is an up-to-date admonition. Preachers and Christian workers of today are ashamed and afraid to be partakers of the affliction of that unmixed gospel. They join up with a semi-religious movement for protection, for security and for advantage. They limit the Holy Spirit, as they take off the keen edge of the affliction of Paul’s Gospel. But if we suffer with Christ and Paul, and follow Paul as he instructed us, we will be glorified and reign with Christ. This should encourage us to an uncompromising, unmixed testimony in this religious day of confusion, compromise and condemnation.
For we are partakers of Christ’s glory that shall be revealed. I Peter 5:1. Hear the prayer of Christ in John 17:22, 24 and I Peter 5:10 and 11.
“And the glory which Thou gavest Me, I have given them; that they may be one, even as We are one.”
“Father, I will that they also, whom Thou hast given Me, be with Me where I am; that they may behold My glory, which Thou hast given Me; for Thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.”
“But the God of all grace, Who hath called us unto His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. To Him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.”

THE LAST SUPPER AND CHRIST ILLUSTRATION OF HOW TO BECOME A PARTAKER
1 ¶ Now before the feast of the Passover, it was clear to Jesus that the time had come for him to go away from this world to the Father. Having once had love for those in the world who were his, his love for them went on to the end.
2 So while a meal was going on, the Evil One having now put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to be false to him,
3 Jesus, being conscious that the Father had put everything into his hands, and that he came from God and was going to God,
4 Got up from table, put off his robe and took a cloth and put it round him.
5 Then he put water into a basin and was washing the feet of the disciples and drying them with the cloth which was round him.

Ritual Washing and the Priesthood
Ritual washing was a key element of Jewish practice, with elaborate procedures and requirements for cleansing those who might become “unclean” during daily life. (2) Several times in the scripture Jesus indicates that the need for this ritual washing has ended now that the messiah has come. (cf Matt. 15, Mark 7, John 2, etc) In John 13, however, we find Jesus cleansing the feet of his disciples.
One possible interpretation is as a priestly act. In Judaism, the Kohen (a member of the priestly class) has his hands washed prior to performing the Priestly Prayer. Historically, this also included washing the feet, although today they often simply remove their shoes. It is one of the rare instances where foot washing is prescribed, following the command of Exodus 30:20-21 that the priestly class “shall wash their hands and their feet” prior to coming to the altar. (3)
The foot washing in John 13 is a prelude to Jesus’ own High Priestly Prayer in John 17. In performing these ablutions, he is thus conferring priesthood on his apostles. It is a way of extending the authority of the Aaronic priesthood to the apostles.
PARTAKER THROUGH BAPTISM
Baptism is a symbol of our partaking of the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. It cannot save a person. Look at LUKE 23:42, ACTS 9:17-18, 1JOHN 1:9 and ROMANS 10:9.
Both the thief on the cross (LUKE 23:42) and Saul (9:17-18) were saved before being baptized. 1JOHN 1:9 states the only required condition is to confess our sins, and ROMANS 10:9 states confess with our mouth Jesus Christ, believe in our heart that God raised him from the dead, and we will be saved.
